Who is in Control of Your Life?
Unless you choose otherwise, you are the only person you can control. You are the only person who controls your happiness. This is part of what makes us human and what makes us who we are.
When we experience feelings of happiness, sadness, anger, or depression, we simply need to ask, “Where do I feel the happiness? … the sadness? … the anger? … the depression?" We feel these things inside ourselves – the only place we can feel them. Yet, most of us continue to search for solutions to feelings outside of ourselves. Many of us are insistent upon lifetime investments of creating on the outside. However, we can choose to actively manipulate, manage, and organize the way we want to feel. Ask yourself, who is in control?
If we want to feel happy, then we create happiness inside. If we want to feel sad, then we can create sadness inside. If we want to feel angry, then we can create anger inside. And, so on. Realize that creating your world on the inside is up to you – only you.
If we mistakenly give control to other people for our feelings of happiness, sadness, anger, or depression, then we must ask hard questions, “Who is in control of my life?” and “Why?” Can others possibly control how we feel? Are things on the outside of us controlling how we feel? No. We have the capacity inside to control our feelings.
To be in control of our lives, we must be in control of our minds and emotions. We cannot ‘outsource’ our inner well-being to other people or situations. We can create happiness and clarity by empowering ourselves with the option to feel whatever we choose to feel. No one else has the ability or responsibility to choose this for us. That which is on the inside controls. This is the most powerful understanding humans can have.
We Must Embrace Challenges to Grow.
We increase our ability to be able to understand ourselves through careful listening and observing inside. If we have a problem and we don’t understand its location (outside or inside) or its origin (outside or inside), then we cannot begin to solve it. Developing this connection is most useful. Recognizing that we can choose (inside) how we feel and react allows us to remain balanced. And, it brings healthy interactions with others.
Our emotional growth and stability depends on challenges and uncertainties. Placing ourselves beyond our comfort zones allows for development. Our brains evolved to solve challenges and uncertainties. Ideas or actions that seem out of reach can easily be within reach by seeking change. Examine assumptions. Try a new train of wonder. Bring forth unbound curiosity. Deviate inward. Who is in control?
Nothing interesting ever happens without doubt. To bravely doubt our perceptions may be the single most powerful thing we can do to set the stage for change. Accepting the fact that we do not see reality – only our mind’s version (perception) of reality – frees us to examine and question our views. By embracing the unknown, we change.
The Universe is in a Constant State of Change.
All things are in a constant state of change. If we learn to expect, embrace and adapt to change, the fewer problems we may have. Fixed ideas are not congruent with the Universe. Exposing ourselves to extreme views allows us to reach a higher place inside (some call it ‘inner peace’). By observing and appreciating all sides without being pulled in any one direction means we can hold opposing points of view in our minds at the same time. This is how we observe, notice, become aware, and reflect.
Observation is free from judgment. It is the active acquisition of information. As we notice, we are not adding anything or subtracting anything. Observation is about how things “are”, and not about how things should be or could be. Clarity and the skill of observation are closely related. Answers for which we search will not come to us just because we think about them. They will come if we improve our observation.
Becoming selectively aware, embracing challenge and uncertainty, and accepting the constant state of change will bring about a new way to navigate in the world, a new way to choose. This is how we create the world inside.
